Dr. Ilona Stricof

My work begins from a simple conviction: a student is not a résumé to optimize, but a young person whose intellectual identity is waiting to become clear.

I know what it looks like when an application works — because I have sat on the other side of the table. As a volunteer reader on the Harvard Admissions Committee, I reviewed hundreds of applications from students around the world. I know what makes an admissions officer stop, read carefully, and advocate for a student in the room. I also know what makes them move on.

My academic career — a decade at Columbia University as a Dean's Fellow and doctoral researcher, a Fulbright Research Award, a published chapter in the Routledge Handbook on Sufism — taught me that the most powerful thing a student can do is develop a genuine intellectual identity. That is what I help them build.

I am fluent in eight languages and have lived and taught on three continents. I understand the particular pressures facing students in Greater China navigating the US and UK admissions process — and I know exactly how to position them for success.

Work With Dr. Stricof

The Phoenix Method

Most admissions consultants teach students how to fill out a form. I help them become the most compelling version of themselves — on paper and in person. The Phoenix Method is a structured process developed from years of admissions reading, elite academic training, and one-on-one student mentorship.

01

Discovery

Through deep, Socratic conversation, I excavate the experiences, values, and intellectual passions that will form the spine of every application.

02

Architecture

I construct a coherent narrative strategy — a "story architecture" — ensuring every element of the application reinforces a single, powerful identity.

03

Craft

I work line by line on every piece of writing until it sounds unmistakably like the student. Elite readers detect inauthenticity in a single paragraph.

04

Positioning

I advise on school selection, timing, and strategy — ensuring each application is submitted where your child is genuinely competitive, not merely aspirational.

Three Ways to Work Together

Every engagement is bespoke. I accept a strictly limited number of clients each year to ensure that every student receives the full attention their application deserves.

"Working with Ilona completely changed the trajectory of my college application process. I came to her only a few weeks before ED2 applications were due feeling extremely stressed, overwhelmed, and sure that my application and essays did not reflect my full potential. She immediately helped me bring clarity, structure, and confidence to the process. Her feedback was thoughtful, honest, and incredibly personalized, and she pushed me to present the strongest and most authentic version of myself. In a very short amount of time, she helped transform both my application and my mindset, and I truly believe her guidance played a major role in my acceptance into a top 25 school. I'm incredibly grateful for her support, dedication, and belief in me throughout the process."
